REGISTRATION

Do I have to register for the Kids Walk? Yes, all walkers must register for the event. You can register online or at the check-in table on the day of the event. You will also need to complete and submit the Release of Liability and Publicity Consent waiver, which is part of the online registration process. If you register at the event, a hard copy waiver must be turned in at the check-in table. It's available in the Kids Walk brochure and can also be downloaded  here.

Is there a registration fee? No. But there is a suggested donation of $20 for all walkers who have not been sponsored.

Do I register specifically for either the NYC, NJ, KS, CT or NC Kids Walk? Yes, there is a prompt in the general online registration where you choose either event; you can also register at either location on the day of the event. Information about the North Carolina event will be available in the Fall of 2012.

How do I register for the Kids Walk if I'm under 18? Online registration is available for participants 14 years and older. When registering online a participant aged 14-17 should have a parent present to agree and electronically sign the Release of Liability and Publicity Consent. Registration automatically creates an online fundraising page. In the case of participants younger than 14, a parent or guardian can register him/herself and then add his/her child, which will create an online fundraising page for the child.  Alternatively, all participants can register by in person on the day of the event. Walkers under 18 will need to either come with a signed copy of the Release of Liability and Publicity Consent or have a parent/ legal guardian sign one at the event.

Do minor-aged walkers have to be accompanied by an adult at the Kids Walk? No, but in the case of walkers under age 18 who are not registered online, the Release of Liability and Publicity Consent should be signed in advance by a parent or guardian and then turned in at the event if registering there.

FUNDRAISING

How are the Kids Walk funds used? 100% of funds donated are used for pediatric cancer research at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. Information about the research project supported by the 2011 Kids Walk is found here.

How do students and other walkers fundraise? Walkers ask donors to "sponsor" them by making a contribution in any amount, either online at www.kidswalkforkidswithcancer.org, by checks sent to Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, or in cash. Many students organize small fundraisers, such as bake sales, talent shows, dances, etc. at their school, and adult walkers have organized happy hours, raffles, etc.

Can you provide a sample fundraising letter? Yes. A sample letter can be found on each location's event page.

Is there a fundraising minimum for walkers or minimum donation amount? Are donations keyed to miles walked? No, donations can be in any amount and there is no minimum. But there is a suggested donation of $20 for all walkers who have not been sponsored.

Is there a minimum number of walkers for a team? No. All are welcome! Bring a team of friends or be your own team!

How it All Got Started.

The Kids Walk began in 2001 as an 8th grade homeroom project at Packer Collegiate in Brooklyn NY. One student's little brother was finishing a 3-year treatment for stage IV neuroblastoma at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, so the students wanted to raise funds to help cure pediatric cancer. The 8th grade walkers raised $35,000, and they vowed to keep walking for kids with cancer. In 2002 the Packer students recruited teams from six other NYC schools, and every year thereafter new teams and new generations of students have joined the cause. How the Funds are Used.

100% of the proceeds from the Kids Walk support pediatric research at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, the world's oldest and largest private cancer center. Kids Walk funds research which is used to find new treatments for hard-to-cure pediatric cancers. Click here to find more about how the funds raised in 2011 were used.
