North Carolina Kids WalkOctober 22, 2011 Please join us -- a group of students age 8 to 18, who are organizing the second annual Kids Walk for Kids with Cancer! When we heard some NYC kids had organized a walkathon to help children fighting cancer, we decided we wanted to support the cause here in NC. Like the NYC Kids Walk, 100% of our proceeds will fund pediatric cancer research at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, the world’s oldest and largest private cancer center. MSKCC is researching new and better cancer treatments for children, and we’re going to help fund these treatments!
There is no fee to take part, but we ask that walkers try to obtain sponsors, who can make a donation in any amount to support pediatric cancer research. We request that walkers who do not get sponsors please contribute $20. The 4-mile walkathon will be preceded by a short student program, and followed by snacks, music, and socializing. It will be a fun, family friendly event that will give hope to kids with cancer! |
You do not have to register for the North Carolina Kids Walk for Kids with Cancer. However, walkers and teams who wish to solicit online donations from sponsors can set up individual and/or team fundraising pages. How to create fundraising pages: 1. Go to Donate Now and select "Become a Fundraiser." 2. You will be brought to a similar page but their will be options above the Kids Walk Image. Choose the option that best suits you: Individual, Team Captain or Join a Team. 3. Create an Active.com account if you do not have one already have one. You must be 14 years or older to create your own account. If under 14, have an adult present. 4. Customize your Fundraising page and begin spreading the word! How it All Got Started.
The Kids Walk began in 2001 as an 8th grade homeroom project at Packer Collegiate in Brooklyn NY. One student's little brother was finishing a 3-year treatment for stage IV neuroblastoma at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, so the students wanted to raise funds to help cure pediatric cancer. The 8th grade walkers raised $35,000, and they vowed to keep walking for kids with cancer. In 2002 the Packer students recruited teams from six other NYC schools, and every year thereafter new teams and new generations of students have joined the cause. To learn more visit our About page.
